One of our new arrivals here at Gainesville Coins is a marvelous 1925-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 Gold Piece, graded AU58 by NGC (the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation.) “AU” stands for “Almost Uncirculated” quality. This grade of 58 is only two points off a Mint State score of 60.
While the 1925 Double Eagles minted at the Philadelphia Mint are fairly common (due to being hoarded in European banks,) the ones at the Denver and San Francisco Mints were held in U.S. banks as collateral for gold certificates, and so were almost all melted down in 1933. There is a population of less than 1000 certified 1925-S coins in all grades, out of an original production of 3.7 million coins!
The Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle was minted from 1907 to 1933, and is considered by many to be the most beautiful U.S. coin ever put into circulation. The Lady Liberty design of the coin has remained so popular, that the U.S. Mint revived it when producing the first U.S. gold bullion coins in 1986.
