Surging platinum prices have led the United States Mint today to raise the price of the 2012-W 1 oz platinum coin by $100. The Mint periodically adjusts silver, gold, and platinum coin prices using data from the London fix price to account for the costs of the precious metals used in their manufacture. The afternoon London fix today for platinum was $1,698.50, compared to $1,577.00 on October 24, 2012. October 24 was the date of the last price adjustment for the 2012 Platinum Eagle, when the Mint dropped the price by $100.
