477 Medieval Silver Coins Found Buried in Shoe in Rotterdam

DutchNews.nl has a story today of archaeologists uncovering 477 medieval silver coins packed into a shoe and buried behind Rotterdam’s city hall. The team was excavating an area behind the present city hall, which was built in 1915.

The 477 silver coins range in date from 1472 to 1592. Archaeologists speculate that the hoard was buried under the floorboards of the building that used to stand at the site during the Eighty Years War (Dutch War of Independence) against Spain that raged between 1568 and 1648.
